It is the unique location of La Tannerie that makes it such an attractive business proposition. The concept of a gite complex in the centre of a small town was not something the current owners had ever considered until they first saw La Tannerie.
But it soon became apparent that such a location had numerous advantages:-
Road
Chalais is at about the furthest southerly point that can be comfortably driven in one day by families travelling from the UK.
The town is about 20 minutes from the N10 Paris - Bordeaux road and links to the northern ports through France's ever-improving motorway network.
Plane
Bordeaux has the nearest airport at about 60 minutes.
Bergerac is 75 minutes away.
Limoges, Poitiers and La Rochelle are all about 2 hours distant.
Train
The high-speed TGV stops at Angoulême on its way to Bordeaux. Local trains operate from there to Chalais, though the current owners have operated a pick-up service from Angoulême as well as the two nearest airports.
Poitou-Charentes has the second highest number of sunshine hours in France (after Provence) yet its proximity to the Atlantic means that the temperatures are less extreme than on the Mediterranean.
Winters are generally shorter than the UK but can be very cold.
